Barriers for Victoria’s Cranbourne Line Upgrade

Barriers for Victoria’s Cranbourne Line Upgrade

Crowd Control and Water Filled Barriers for Victorian Rail Project

Project Snapshot:

The $679 million Cranbourne rail line upgrade involves fully duplicating 8 kilometres of the track as well as duplicating two rail bridges. An alliance comprising of McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott MacDonald and Metro Trains Melbourne will complete the work which stretches from Dandenong to Lynbrook.

The works are being delivered in partnership with the Level Crossing Removal Project, and when complete, will allow for peak hour services every ten minutes on the Cranbourne line.

This project will also deliver a new rail connection for the Port Rail Shuttle Network, allowing freight to be transported by train from Dandenong South through to the Port of Melbourne. The Cranbourne Line project is due to be completed by 2025.

The Challenges:

Across multiple areas of the site, fencing and barriers needed to be installed to ensure both vehicle and pedestrian safety. With hundreds of workers on site day and night, the clear demarcation of walkways, parking areas and no-go zones were critical to keeping everyone safe.

The project team needed strong, reliable and easy to install barriers that would protect against light impacts, along with a more simple pedestrian barrier for walkways and paths.

Additionally, large existing trees needed to be protected with a simple barrier, and Jaybro’s Fortress barrier range fit the project’s needs.

Jaybro’s  Solution:

The Jaybro Melbourne team supplied a large quantity of Trafix 2000 white waterfilled barriers and orange Fortress Crowd Control Barriers.

About the Trafix 2000 barriers

The white barriers provide excellent protection against low speed vehicles making them ideal for carparks and for fencing off areas within the work site.

The Trafix 2000 Waterfilled Barrier is an innovative Australian designed and manufactured barrier that has been built for the toughest conditions. The strong UV-protected polyethylene gives added durability, and it is simple and lightweight to install when empty.

Before filling with water, each module weighs just 20kg, however after installation and once filled with water the barrier weighs 327kg. This heavyweight barricade provides a stable and secure barrier that links up with other modules using a simple moulded interlocking pin and hole system. This connection system results in a one-piece unit with no loose pins. Built-in handles help with the interlocking process and carrying the barrier when empty.

The Trafix 2000 water filled barrier is made from eco-friendly recyclable polyethylene and is available in 2 metre long modules. It is ideal for use in pedestrian delineation applications such as this, as well as for cordoning off no-go zones, drop-offs and pits.

About the Fortress crowd control barriers

Fortress Fencing's orange powder coated crowd control barriers are highly visible making them ideal night work and low light applications like in tunnels and in indoor factory situations. These interlocking barriers are fast to install, durable and measure 2.3m long so you can deploy long runs of fencing quickly.

Crowd control barriers feature a double interlocking hinge point that provides excellent stability and panels are designed with removable feet that can be taken off during stacking, transport and storage. Each barrier is fully galvanized and powder coated to ensure maximum life in the outdoors.

These barriers are ideal for events, temporary pedestrian thoroughfare changes, and demarcating no-go zones on site as shown in this application for the Level Crossing Removal project.
