Pedestrian Safety Equipment for Crossings and Schools

Wherever vehicles and people are sharing the road, pedestrian safety equipment is an absolute must.

Installing safety features like pedestrian refuge islands, signage, crossings, ramps and handrails is an important part of your civil construction project. Although each state road authority has its own take on signage and specific road furniture such as handrails and islands, all these items are designed for the same purpose: to keep pedestrians safe.

If you need pedestrian safety equipment for your next project, Jaybro can help. We have a wide range of products that can be installed by contractors, councils and road repair teams to create a safer environment for all.

Pedestrian crossings and refuges

Pedestrian crossings or zebra crossings are marked with white line marking paint, making them easy to identify. Even though motorists should always give way to pedestrians – even if there is no marked pedestrian crossing – there is still the potential for an accident. Having clearly marked and signposted pedestrian crossings is a key consideration for councils and road authorities.

At times, the crossings may need to be repainted after wear and tear, so it’s good to have a maintenance and review schedule in place to ensure that the pedestrian crossings in your area are still highly visible and functioning as they should.

Along with adequate road markings, pedestrian crossings often feature refuges or islands in the middle of the road, enabling people to cross safely in two stages. Pedestrian refuges are particularly helpful in highly populated area or for busy roads. They provide a place to pause when crossing the road, and they are often furnished with handrails and signage.

As with zebra crossings, refuge islands occasionally need maintenance, as the handrails and pedestrian barriers can become bent, broken or non-functional due to impacts with cars. If you need to buy a replacement pedestrian barrier, we have a few options in our range.

Take a look at the Jaybro online shop for pedestrian barriers in stock. We also sell signs that are appropriate for crossings and other reflective signage that can help keep pedestrians safe in your area.

Other types of pedestrian safety equipment for crossings

SCHOOL ZONE SIGNS

School crossings are another type of pedestrian crossing that requires special signage and equipment. Children can be unpredictable and hence many areas have heavily reduced speed limits around schools in peak times, special school zone signage and red and white barber pole style posts around the crossings nearest the school. School crossing safety signs feature a Children Crossing banner which is mounted on dowels and placed into brackets during school start and finish times.

School crossing signs are generally used in conjunction with a set of red and white poles placed at regular intervals around the pedestrian crossing. At some schools, a safety officer or crossing supervisor uses a stop/slow bat or a children crossing sign or flag to manually stop motorists and help children to cross safely.

All types of children crossing signs and school zone signs are available from Jaybro.

LEVEL CROSSING SIGNS

Other types of crossings include level crossings, which are prevalent in Melbourne but are gradually being phased out as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project.

The Jaybro team has been heavily involved in supplying safety and barrier products for this project – you can read more about this in our case studies here:
